Build freely, disagree openly, and treat every person here with respect.
This is the code of conduct of WolOS (Wonderland OS). It is short on purpose.
1. Why this exists
WolOS is an operating system made by people who mostly meet as text: issues, reviews, chat, commits. Text loses tone, so small words do large damage. This page says what we expect, so nobody has to guess and nobody has to fight about it later.
2. Who you are here
You are someone, independent of everything else. Here we know you by what you do: the code you send, the review you write, the way you answer a question. Your employer, your country, your politics, your beliefs and your identity do not give you extra credit and do not count against you. We do not care about your age, where you come from, your background, your job or your credentials. Only your contribution and how you treat people count. A first-time contributor and a long-time maintainer follow the same rules.
We want this to be fun: a place to build things, learn, play and make friends, not a corporate hallway.
3. What we welcome
- Free code. WolOS is open source. Read it, change it, fork it, ship your own version.
- Disagreement. Say "I think this design is wrong, and here is why." Argue about code, numbers and trade-offs as hard as you like.
- Plain questions, including the ones you think are basic.
- Honest reviews. Point at the line, explain the problem, suggest a fix.
- Mistakes, followed by a fix. Everybody breaks the build sometimes.
Blunt is fine. Hard, direct, even harsh criticism of code, designs and decisions is welcome, and sometimes necessary. "This patch is wrong, and here is why" is a good review. Be blunt about the work, never about the human.
4. What is not welcome
Some things are out, in every project space:
- Treating someone as less because of who they are, where they come from, who they love, or how their body or mind works.
- Mocking a person's identity, name, accent or body.
- "Jokes" at the expense of a group of people. "It was only a joke" does not make it fine.
- Words that describe people as animals, dirt, a disease or a threat to remove.
- Praising or calling for violence, or praising the idea that one group should rule over others.
- Insults, threats, harassment, and following someone around the project after they asked you to stop.
- Sexual content or comments aimed at people.
- Publishing someone's private information without their permission.
- Spam and trolling: messages written only to start a fight.
To be clear: racism, transphobia, homophobia and misogyny are included here, in any form.
5. Politics and words
Politics does not change code, but words change discussions and communities.
We do not ask what you believe, and we do not care what you post or think outside the project. Inside the project, we ask you to keep the discussion about the work. Treating people as less is not a political position we need to balance. It is behaviour, and the rules above cover it.
6. Upstreams
WolOS is built on other people's software, and we admire much of it as engineering. Using, packaging or forking a project is a technical choice. It is not support of, agreement with, or association with its authors or their views, in any form.
Some of the loudest voices around tools we build on have spoken about people in ways this page does not allow. One example: WolOS ships a fork of Hyprland. We value the compositor's engineering; its project leadership was banned from freedesktop.org in 2024 over harassment in its community, and we do not share those voices or that conduct. We take the code, not the voices. Here, nobody is treated as a target.
7. Enforcement
Sanctions are decided by the project's authority: today Julia Klee as lead, in the future the councils or maintainers the project formally appoints. Maintainers act on their behalf, and the authority's decision is final.
To report a problem, email conduct@wolos.org. If the problem is public and not sensitive, you can also open an issue on the issue tracker. Tell us what happened, where, and when. Links and screenshots help.
We handle reports privately. We do not share the name of the person who reported. We do not shame anyone in public.
The response fits the problem:
- A private warning.
- Removal or editing of the message, comment or commit text.
- A temporary or permanent removal from project spaces.
- Declining contributions. If someone shows this kind of behaviour in the project, we may not want their name on our work.
Most problems end at step 1. Serious cases, such as threats, can go directly to step 3.
8. Scope and changes
This doctrine applies in every WolOS space: code, issues, pull requests, reviews, commit messages, documentation, chat, mailing lists and events. It also applies to anyone who speaks or acts on behalf of the project, wherever they are.
Interpretation. This page is interpreted and applied by the project's authority: today Julia Klee as lead, and in the future the councils or maintainers the project formally appoints. Their reading is final, and they can change this page. A change is a normal commit to docs/DOCTRINE.md, so the history is public.
